Calling all Chess Players: Irish Open Tournament 2008!

The Irish Open Tournament for chess players with vision impairments will be held in the Marine Hotel, Sutton Cross, Dublin, from Friday October 10 to Monday October 13, 2008.

The Tournament will be a 6 round swiss, open to all players with vision impairments and their guides. The rate of play will be all moves in 1 hour and 45 minutes for each player. There will be two sections if numbers allow; a Major section open to players of all strengths and a Minor section confined to players rated below 1400 ELO.

RTE Series - “This is Me”

Jimmy Murray, Irish Blind Sports Golf Coordinator, has agreed to work with RTE in their recent project “This is Me”. He will feature in one of the 8-part documentary concentrating on eight exceptional Irish people. Camera crews will follow Jimmy around filming him to get a glimpse into his daily life and of doing what he loves best - playing golf! Jimmy will be representing Ireland in the World Blind Golf Championships in Belfast this August. The series began on June 30 and is on RTE One on Monday’s at 7:30pm.

As part of an ongoing effort to provide sport and recreation opportunities for people who are blind or vision impaired, Kelly Boutilier, Sports Development Officer with Irish Blind Sports, in partnership with Sports Inclusion Development Officers across the country, will hold Call of Interest meetings. The next set of meetings is due to take place in Kildare (late August) and Cork (early September).
The purpose of these meetings is to find out what kind of sport and recreation opportunities people who are blind or vision impaired want. Call for Sport Coordinators (tandem cycling & swimming)

Do you have some spare time and an interest in either swimming or tandem cycling? Would you like to help people who are blind or vision impaired to get active and have fun? If you answered yes to these questions, we would like to hear from you.

Irish Blind Sports is looking for new Sport Coordinators for Swimming and Tandem cycling. Sport coordinators play a vital role in the organising, development and running of Irish Blind Sports sport and recreation activities.

The time commitment is approximately three hours per week. Organisational skills and an outgoing attitude are essential. All coordinators will be reimbursed for out of pocket expenses, have a possibility of travel nationally and internationally and be fully supported by Irish Blind Sports, Sports Development Officer.
