NCBI Library Access Service is the Official Partner of LEGO® Braille Bricks in Ireland.
The LEGO Braille Bricks concept is a play-based methodology that teaches braille to children who are blind or vision impaired. Newly launched, the toolkit comprises of LEGO bricks that have been adjusted to correspond to the Braille alphabet. Each LEGO brick also has a printed letter or character to ensure the tool is inclusive allowing sighted teachers and students to play on equal terms with a child with vision impairment.
NCBI Library Access Service invites you to register your interest for free online LEGO® Braille Bricks training.
NCBI Library Access Service will be taking delivery of the toolkits in December and distribution will begin in early 2021. In order to avail of the toolkits, you must have completed an online training seminar. LEGO Braille Bricks training sessions will be held during the month of November.

What is LEGO Braille Bricks?
LEGO Braille Bricks is a playful tool to teach Braille to children with vision impairment. The toolkit comprises of LEGO bricks that have been adjusted to correspond to Braille alphabets. Each LEGO brick also has a printed letter or character to ensure the tool is inclusive allowing sighted teachers, students and family members to play on equal terms with a child with vision impairment.
A selection of signature LEGO brick colours have been chosen specifically to ensure colour contrast and allow for a playful learning experience in an inclusive setting.
The toolkit is accompanied by a teaching concept that builds on a learning through play approach and also includes ideas for socially interactive games with the bricks.
The aim is for children to firstly start to use touch to identify different dot combinations and then to start to learn Braille in a fun way. The bricks have printed letters on enabling children with and without vision impairment to play together.
Who can order a set of LEGO Braille Bricks and are there any special requirements?
There are two requirements to order: the LEGO Braille Bricks are a learning resource so remain property of the service/school, and at least one team member must undertake a free online LEGO Braille Bricks training session, hosted by NCBI, and share the information with colleagues.
How can I order a set?
- Email [email protected] to register your interest, including your name and the address of the school you work for, and how many sets of bricks you will need. You can order one pack per child.
- We will reply to your email with dates and times of available upcoming online training sessions so you can book a slot
- At least one team member from each service must attend a mandatory online training session around the accompanying teaching concepts. This information should then be cascaded to any other relevant staff.
When will LEGO Braille Bricks be available in Ireland?
NCBI are due to receive the toolkits in December 2020 and will begin distribution in January 2021.
