NCBI’s Rehabilitative Training Centre will hold its annual open day this year on Wednesday, June 21st, between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm.
Our open day offers prospective students, their family, friends and other professionals an opportunity to visit the centre, meet with staff and get an overview of the ‘Learning For Life’ training programme. Current and former course participants will also be available on the day to answer questions and talk about their experiences of the programme.
Advance booking is not required, and the centre is open to the public any time during the day.
For those who may not be familiar with our current suite of training, please find a short summary below. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Stuart Lawler on stuart.lawler@ncbi.ie or on 087 9926360.
NCBI’s ‘Learning For Life’ programme currently has eight certified modules at level 1 on the national framework of qualifications (NFQ), with a level 2 programme launching in the Autumn of this year. These courses are:
- Let’s Talk, which encourages the learner to be more confident in social situations, by developing key communications skills.
- Personal Care, which promotes good practice in one’s personal appearance, management of clothes and general well-being.
- Personal Safety, which promotes an awareness of the environment around you, both inside and outside. It promotes a sense of independence and encourages learners to explore the wider world.
- My Choices, which encourages learners to think through short-term, medium-term and long-term decisions, and understand their implications.
- Food Choice and Health, which encourages good practice in diet and the preparation of healthy nutritious meals. This module is linked with a practical cookery course.
- Setting learning Goals, which encourages the coordinated planning of learning of all kinds. Participants are encouraged to develop strategies for obtaining and using information.
- Fit For Life, which encourages a more healthy approach for learners. There are a range of theoretical and practical sessions in this course, and participants get the opportunity to experience new and previously un-tried physical activities.
- Sound, Rhythm and Music, which encourages an appreciation of and awareness of music as an expression of one’s emotions.
We also offer a number of QQI-certified modules at levels 2 and 3, as part of the WriteOn programme, which is offered by NALA, the National Adult Literacy Agency.
The European Computer Driving License (ECDL) sits at the equivalent of level 4 on the NFQ, and is an assessment of a wide range of competencies in the use of a computer and associated applications.
Other non-certified courses include:
Advocacy, Creative Writing, Braille, Kitchen Skills, Horticulture, Community Awareness (work preparation skills), Toastmasters (public speaking and presentation skills), Customer Service Skills, Creative Dance, ceramics, crafts and textiles, swimming, access to the gym and yoga.
