AMD Awareness Week 2012 will take place from 22nd to 30th September. Every September, leading sight charities and organisations come together to help raise awareness of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness among over 50s in Ireland affecting 1 in 10 people.
In 2012, the event which will launch AMD Awareness Week is a unique Sensory Entertainment lunchtime concert, which will take place at the National Concert Hall, Dublin on Wednesday 26th September 2012 at 1pm. RTÉ’s Mary Kennedy will be joined by some of the nation’s top stars, including triple-platinum musicians, an international bestselling author and one of Ireland’s best loved actors will entertain up to 250 blindfolded audience members with a selection of music, story-telling, comedy and chat. Tickets, which cost €10, are available from the National Concert Hall on 01 417 0000 or www.nch.ie. All proceeds will go to NCBI and Fighting Blindness.
Free AMD screening will be available through a mobile testing unit, which will visit Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Tallaght and Cork during AMD Week.
