Services for Students, Parents, Teachers and Employers on Show at the Education Show

Release Date: Apr 2nd, 2001

NCBI was delighted to be included in The Education Show 2001. It was an invaluable opportunity to promote the many services available from NCBI to students, parents, teachers and potential employers. Hundreds of people visited our stand at the RDS over the three day period from 26 - 28 April with enquiries and requests, or simply just to take time to see ‘who we are and what we do’.

A team of trained professionals were available to provide information and demonstrations on the following: accessible information technology and resource equipment, our excellent Braille and Talking Book Library Service and Magazines, details of the range of different eye conditions effecting people in Ireland and future career opportunities and employment prospects for those with visual impairments.

The employment support unit provides guidance and support to people with a visual impairment, students, teachers, employers, employees and training establishments on employment opportunities. Advice and guidance is also given to schools, colleges or employees on the most appropriate choice of adaptive technology for a visually impaired person.

There are many ways to assist students with a visual impairment ranging from encouraging other students to aid and support their colleagues, providing basic training as a sighted guide, advance planning of lessons and examinations to providing career guidance, encouragement and employment prospects. These are all included in a range of information leaflets produced by NCBI on employment, education, training and technology issues. The education and employment factsheets are available on request from NCBI Information and Resource Officer.

Also available were details of our Talking Book Library Service, which stocks books for the Junior and Leaving Certificate, and on all topics and interests similar to those found in a public library. This service operates through the postal system and is free of charge.

We at NCBI are confident that the many services offered by our team of trained professionals will continue to help many of our service users: students; parents; and teachers.
