The National Council for the Blind of Ireland today called for an end to their victimisation by burglars who have broken into their premises on Whitworth Road, Drumcondra and stolen merchandise six times in the past twelve months.

The stolen goods are specially adapted aids for people with vision impairments - items such as talking watches, children's Braille toys and kitchen utensils which are essential to people without sight, but useless otherwise.

"We do not understand why we have been targeted in this way" said Desmond Kenny, Chief Executive of NCBI. "One of the products stolen, a children's stuffed toy with Braille buttons, was specially ordered from the USA for an Irish child with a vision impairment. How someone could steal it or what use it could be is beyond comprehension. The charity, and ultimately our service users who rely on our service are the victims of these crimes."

The charity, which is the primary service provider to people experiencing problems with their sight have appealed to the public not to purchase any talking watches, talking clocks, large print kitchen utensils or Braille toys from rogue traders.
