Students with Vision Impairments Eligible to Reduced CAO Points Offers

The CAO application season is upon us again and this year it is estimated that almost 70,000 applicants will apply for a third-level place.

A number of these college places will be offered to applicants with a disability under 23 years of age who have reduced points through a non-standard application process.

The following colleges participate in this application process:

  • IT Athlone,
  • Dublin Institute of Technology,
  • Dublin City University,
  • National College of Ireland,
  • NUI Galway,
  • NUI Maynooth
  • Trinity College Dublin,
  • University College Cork,
  • University College Dublin and
  • University of Limerick.

How to Apply

You can apply online at www.cao.ie to the supplementary admissions by completing the standard CAO application form by February 1st, 2009.

You must disclose your disability on the CAO online form by ticking the Disability Box.

You will then be directed to the separate online Supplementary Information Form, which will ask you to provide additional information about your vision impairment and supports you may require in college.

You must provide the following information:

  • details of your disability,
  • supports provided in second-level education,
  • possible supports required in higher education and
  • verification on your eye condition from your eye consultant.

The CAO can also forward you a paper copy of this form to complete, if you prefer. You should return this form to the CAO by March 27th, 2009.
