International White Cane Day 2010

International White Cane Day takes place on Friday the 15th of October. White Cane Day is a worldwide celebration to highlight the achievements of people who are blind or vision impaired and the symbol of blindness and tool of independence, the white cane.

The white cane is a tool that is a key to greater mobility and independence for people who are blind and have low vision but it is also a reminder of our commitment to removing barriers, both physically and attitudinal. In our society today, the white cane has become one of the most recognized symbols of a blind person’s ability to live independently. It is now widely acknowledged as a symbol representing blindness and mobility.
