NCBI adventurers prepare for expedition to Antarctica

Although they won’t be travelling as far as Pat Falvey and his team, NCBI (National Council for the Blind of Ireland) is currently gathering together a team of adventurers for a unique charity trek to the most remote place on earth – Antarctica.

Charity treks have become very popular in recent years, providing a fantastic opportunity for people to see the world, while also raising money for their favourite charity. NCBI has been involved in fundraising challenges for more than 20 years and is probably best known for its cycling adventures, through the Blazing Saddles.

“After years of discussions and research, the Antarctica expedition has finally become a realistic proposal for NCBI and our walking/trekking fundraising group, the Terracotta Ramblers,” according to NCBI CEO Des Kenny.

“Although the expedition doesn’t take place until November, there is a lot of planning to do between now and then and anyone who is interested in exploring the uninhabited wilderness of this vast continent – the mountains, glaciers, icebergs and of course the wildlife – should register their interest now,” continued Des.

Antarctica has a total surface area of about 14.2 million sq km in summer, approximately twice the size of Australia, and doubles in size during winter. NCBI has chartered a ship (icebreaker), which will allow the group to disembark several times to explore the mountain icebergs, volcanic islands, wildlife and weather and whaling stations. The group will hopefully have the chance to watch the Emperor penguins as they make their way to open water.

The fundraising target for this event is €10,000 per person sharing. For more information on this or any of NCBI’s fundraising events please contact the fundraising team on LoCall 1850 33 43 53 or visit www.ncbi.ie.

NCBI is a not-for-profit charitable organisation which offers support and services nationwide to people experiencing difficulties with their eyesight. There are over 12,500 people currently availing of these essential services. NCBI relies on income from donations and fundraising activities to improve existing services and to develop new services.
