In Memoriam — Dr. Mary Heneghan 1928-2008

NCBI was saddened to learn of the recent death of Dr. Mary Heneghan of Clonmel who died on February 11th 2008.

She was associated with NCBI for over 45 years and was Chairman of the South Tipperary branch of NCBI for most of that time.

Born in Dublin in 1928, the daughter of Mr. Patrick Dardis who was for a time Secretary of the Department of Industry and Commerce, Mary was a pupil of Mount Anville School, Dublin.

She entered the medical profession and trained as a pediatrician, initially at Liverpool and Manchester and later at the Children’s Hospital Crumlin, Dublin.

It was while working at the University Hospital Galway that she met her husband Thomas and they eventually moved to Clonmel where they set up in general practice together and had worked there since 1959.

Up to the time of her death, Mary still had her particular patients who would attend no one else. She is survived by her husband Thomas and her two daughters. May she always be remembered for her kindness and dedication to her work in the development of blind welfare in south Tipperary. Her kindness to vision impaired persons in the county is fondly remembered by many.
