New Premises for NCBI Limerick
NCBI’s Limerick office recently moved to brand new premises on the city’s Lord Edward Street, a grand name indeed for the magnificent, purpose-built offices adjacent to Limerick’s bus and railway station.
For 15 years NCBI occupied a converted house around the corner on Wolfe Tone Street. However, in recent years the building had degenerated into a state of disrepair. “Appropriately enough,” says Regional Manager Toni O’Dwyer, “we were located just a stone’s throw from the birthplace of Frank McCourt. It was like Angela’s Ashes for the 21st century. The heating failed regularly, there were holes in the roof, and the plumbing had a mind of its own. If we hadn’t moved away from Wolfe Tone soon there was going to be a staff rebellion.”
The new premises, just around the corner, but a million miles away in every other sense, is a purpose-built, fully accessible ground floor office space. Facilities include a low vision room, IT training room, interview/counselling room and kitchen area, as well as bright and spacious office and reception areas. “We now have the premises and facilities to be able to offer a complete service”, Toni continued, adding “the fact that we are so close to the rail and bus station will make it easy for anyone wishing to reach us.”
In addition, NCBI has acquired two apartments adjoining its new offices which will provide a residential aspect to rehabilitation training. For information on use of the apartments, please contact Toni O’Dwyer at the address below or email toni.odwyer@ncbi.ie.
Currently there are nine staff members in NCBI Limerick – Regional Manager Toni O’Dwyer, Community Resource Workers Caroline Lane, Maura Barry, Caroline Fitzgerald and Michelle Withers, Rehab and IT Trainer Colette Quinlivan, Rehab Worker Jo Ambrey, Senior Personnel Officer Helen Shanahan and Clerical Officer Aonghus Meaney.
The new address of the Limerick office is:

Be Sunwise with SunEyes Campaign
NCBI is delighted to announce that it will be partnering with West Midland Optical (WMO) in 2009 to raise awareness of good eye health and to raise much needed funds to support our work around the country.
West Midland Optical supplies frames and lenses for glasses and sunglasses and is also the sole distributor in Ireland of the eye health supplement Macushield.
NCBI’s Chief Executive, Des Kenny said, “With West Midland Optical’s support our aim this year is to make people more aware of the importance of taking care of their sight. We will be drawing particular attention to the steps that people can and should take to protect their eyes from the sun’s rays, all year round and not just in the summer.”
West Midland Optical’s Managing Director, Eugene Matthews said, “We are really pleased to be able to support the good work that NCBI does with people who are living with sight loss in Ireland. As well as raising awareness about sight loss, we want to help them raise some money too.”
We will keep you updated on the awareness and fundraising campaigns in the next edition of NCBI News.
