Employment support

Summary: Our employment advisor works with people experiencing sight loss at all career levels, providing career guidance, advice on training, career advancement, retention and creative adaptations that can be made in the workplace.

Who can contact the employment service?

If you are a school leaver, long-term unemployed, have recently acquired vision loss or if your sight is deteriorating and it is affecting your work, you can contact our employment advisor to arrange a meeting.
The employment support service can provide advice on careers, third level education and training opportunities, job seeking and interview skills, as well as application procedures.

Planning your future

At the first meeting, our employment advisor will carry out an holistic individual assessment, which will explore your educational and employment background. Together you will identify what it is that you want to achieve and work out a realistic action plan to help you to achieve these goals.

Introducing technology

As well as providing advice on employment and training, the employment service can recommend a range of assistive technology [ 1 ], which can enlarge print on a computer screen or read aloud what is on the screen. Scanners can transfer printed material onto your PC and closed circuit televisions (CCTVs) may enable you to read memos, books and to fill out forms.

Advice for employers

We also work with employers [ 2 ] to outline the adaptations that can be made in the workplace to accommodate people with sight loss, provide information on the grants that are available and to promote the capabilities of people with sight loss in employment.
