Summary: Our employment advisor provides information and advice to public and private organisations to promote the employment of people with sight loss in the workplace.
Technology
NCBI assists government agencies and private companies in the employment of people with sight loss.
Technology has had a huge impact on the opportunities that are open to people with sight loss and there are very simple adaptations that you can make in the workplace to accommodate an employee who is blind or vision impaired. These include installing assistive technology such as screen reading or magnification software and scanners that transfer printed documents onto the computer screen.
Advice
Our employment advisor conducts on-site visits to meet with supervisors and managers to provide advice on the following:
- Grant assistance that is available for installing assistive technology
- Any relevant employment and equality legislation.
- Suggestions on how you can reasonably accommodate an employee’s needs.
- Any technology that may be of use to an employee with sight loss.
- Advice on advancement and training.
- Disability awareness training.
If you are an employer, get more information on employing a person with sight loss in our employers section.
Advice for employees
NCBI also works with school leavers, long-term unemployed and people whose sight loss is affecting their work. We provide advice on careers, third level education and training opportunities, job seeking skills, application procedures and interview skills.
