Disability awareness training

Summary: NCBI provides disability awareness to public and private organisations to encourage a greater understanding of the issues around disability and to promote the development of services that are accessible to all.

Why avail of awareness training?

More and more organisations realise that their buildings and services should be accessible to people with disabilities. While this is partly as a result of the 2005 Disability Act, public and private organisations are also paying more attention to the people who access their services and understand that people with disabilities cannot be excluded.

The aim of disability awareness training is to remove some of the communication, attitudinal and physical barriers that prevent people with sight loss from fully participating in society.

What awareness training involves

Once your organisation has decided to embark on disability awareness training, NCBI’s staff will work with you to ensure you achieve your goals and to establish how best to deliver the training as well as to whom among your staff.

The awareness programme includes practical information on eye conditions, teaching people how to guide a person with sight loss safely, providing information on good practice and advice on adaptations that can be made in the workplace to assist customers and visitors with disabilities.

Everyone who takes part in the training should feel more confident in dealing with people with sight loss and will also gain an insight into the issues affecting people who are blind and vision impaired.

The awareness programme may also highlight areas where your services, or the information, you provide to the public are inaccessible to people who are blind and vision impaired. NCBI’s staff can then advise and assist you in making your facilities more accessible.

There are simple ways to provide an inclusive service, such as providing information in accessible formats like large print, braille and audio.

Our staff will also provide sighted guide training, which will teach your employees how to guide a blind person safely through the building.
