1997 was the pilot year of NCBI's Tree of Light project. The project was the brainchild of NCBI's Chief Excutive, Desmond Kenny, who wanted to highlight the relationship between light and sight loss in an aesthetic manner.
Each year since then, the Tree of Light has returned to Dublin Airport in pride of place. Aer Rianta's encouragement has ensured that the annual 'Festival of Lights' at Dublin Airport is initiated and led by the spectacular lighting of the Tree of Light. ESB have assisted with electrical fixtures and fittings through rain, hail and snow. Coillte have supplied the essential tree and the goodwill of top Irish companies has ensured the continuation of this and many other essential projects.
