ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY CAMPS FOR CHILDREN TAKING PLACE IN LIMERICK

A three day residential camp in Assistive Technology for children with sight loss takes place in Limerick next week.

Aimed at children from 10 to 14 years of age with low vision and no vision, the camp  takes place over three days in Mary Immaculate College Limerick  from the 27th – 29th June .

Caroline Lane, from the National Council for the Blind of Ireland, who are organising the event  says the camps have proven to be highly popular and successful.

She explains “The Assistive Technology classes are brilliant as they serve to develop and improve print access skills, including touch typing, keyboard and shortcut commands, PC accessibility features and  specialist software.  Participants are also provided with instruction in the use of accessibility solutions and apps using emerging technology such as android and apple devices. The children will also take part in classes to improve social and communication skills, orientation and mobility and self advocacy. As sight loss is a low incidence disability, a significant amount of time will be facilitated for peer support. We find this is invaluable and the kids really grow in confidence as a result”.
Families wishing to stay overnight will be offered subsidized rates for accommodation nearby, a family BBQ and quiz night will be held on one evening and parents will also be invited to a demonstration and information and feedback session.

“Get West” will be facilitating a team building and skills based activity on one of the afternoons.
