How I See Campaign part one – What does your sight look like for you?

The Vision Ireland How I See over picture has a navy and white background. The Vision Ireland logo is in the top left of the image, while a clip art image of a man with a white cane walking across a road crossing is over to the right of the image. The text on the image reads How I See Campaign 2023.

Welcome to NCBI’s How I See Campaign 2023! We hope this campaign will provide some insight into what everyday life is like for people who are blind or vision impaired.

This Campaign stems from service users and advocates highlighting to us the common misconceptions among the wider public on what they believe it is like to be blind or vision impaired. The How I See Campaign aims to inform and educate the public about the realities of living with sight loss and to answer many questions people may have but are too afraid to ask.

People who are living with sight loss are perfectly capable of living independent lives with some simple adaptations. It is important that the wider public are aware of this and are able to alter how they interact with people who are blind or vision impaired accordingly.

In part one of NCBI’s How I See campaign 2023, four participants in the campaign describe, for people who might not be aware, what their vision actually looks like for them. The intention is to try to depict to someone who is fully sighted that each person’s sight loss presents differently for them. The simple message here is that not all sight loss is or looks the same.

In the coming parts of our campaign, you will then learn about how these people do everyday tasks like putting toothpaste on their toothbrush or using a smart phone. Some people will be able to use their residual sight while others will reveal how they utilise clever tactics or technology to help them live their lives.

Stay tuned for all instalments of the campaign in the coming weeks!
