Located in Drumcondra, Dublin 9, the National Training Centre (NTC) is Ireland’s only training centre for people of working age who are blind or have low vision.
The NTC provides a range of training opportunities to empower people with the skills they need to succeed in gaining meaningful employment. Courses include computing, communications, self-advocacy, job seeking and QQI level programs in Employment Skills and Retail Practice, along with Braille and assistive technology classes.
Jody Morris, Service Development Practice Lead, who joined the NTC team in October 2022, shared some insight about the dedicated team of tutors, the programmes they are currently running, and events planned for upcoming weeks: “The NTC is a dynamic learning environment where tutors hold qualifications in teaching and universal design for learning. Accessibility is embedded into everything that we do, and tutors take a person-centred approach. The NTC is more than just a place for structured learning, it is a hub for information sharing, peer support and collaboration.”
Jody highlighted that students regularly have the opportunity to be involved in masterclasses on a range of topics, to attend presentations from guest speakers and to have their voices heard through participation in tertiary-level research projects and collaborations.
Learning pathways are designed to ensure that students’ progress and achieve their learning goals. We also provide support with work experience placements, job seeking and further education options.
The NTC is also committed to raising awareness of low vision and blindness in the broader community and providing tailored awareness training to education providers, community and corporate organisations to help break down the barriers that exist preventing people who are blind or have low vision from reaching their potential and living the life they choose.
