West African children with sight loss are benefitting from the kindness of a Co. Louth collaborative effort between the NCBI and a local charity.
The NCBI is donating unused long canes to people in Ghana through a joint initiative with a Dundalk based aid development charity.
Conor Hughes of Crosscause says “The campaign appeal for canes began quite recently. We have a self-funded volunteer working in Ghana who identified the urgent need for this. We are part of an eye screening team who do outreach into remote villages. We approached the Dundalk branch of the NCBI and Sean Doran and other staff rowed in behind us, recognising the huge need for this help in what is a developing country. We couldn’t have done this without the help of NCBI. It is wonderful generosity on behalf of the NCBI to gift us its unused aids for people with sight loss. Every day the canes are making their way to the people who need them most”.
Conor goes on to say “The people in this community in Ghana have next to nothing , they don’t have access to the services that people with sight loss in Ireland have , so it’s great to see how NCBI is transcending continintents and making a real and positive difference”.
